VP44 Injection Pump

Performance upgrades for the VP44

VP44 pump The VP44 injection pump is a distributor configuration radial piston fuel pump. It is found on 1998.5 - 2002 5.9L Cummins diesels. In 2003, the Bosch CP3 pump replaced the VP44. Since more fuel is more power, many companies have engineered upgrade kits for the VP44 so that it can provide enough fuel pressure/volume to support up to 1200 horsepower. If you are looking for big numbers from your 98-02 Cummins, you may consider upgrading the pump for additional fuel pressure & flow.

Otherwise Known As:

VP44, VP44 injection pump

How It Works:

Big injectors and aggressive tuning require more fuel flow and pressure than stock trucks. The VP44 is perfectly capable of meeting fueling requirements with upgraded internal components.

Pros:

• Increased fuel pressure leads to better fuel atomization.
• Flow capabilities to support up to 1200 hp when properly equipped.

Cons:

Requires disassembly of injection pump unless buying a brand new unit.

Possible Problems:

Make sure to have the modifications performed by a qualified technician or skilled mechanic.

Est. Gains:

Depends on application (tuning, injector size)

Applications:

1998.5 - 2002 5.9L Cummins ISB

Additional Info:

The VP44 needs fuel in order to provide lubrication. If you are heavily modifying your VP44 to flow a lot fuel, you should invest in a performance lift pump to ensure the injection pump does not starve.
