5R110 TorqShift vs. Allison 1000 vs. 48RE

Automatic Transmission Shootout

Ford introduced the TorqShift transmission in 2003 as Dodge introduced the 48RE. Both were significant upgrades from previous transmissions used, but Chrysler's 4 speed failed to combat the reputation that the Allison 1000 had earned in the market. Ford's 5 speed TorqShift proved a worthy competitor against the heavy duty Allison, boasting a significantly higher max input rating and tighter gear ratios. Chrysler's 48RE proved to be a much more reliable gearbox than the previous 47RE, but the transmission typically lacks the longevity that the Allison and TorqShift are known for.
